Troop D of the 17th Cavalry had multiple tours in Vietnam, serving initially with the 199th Infantry Brigade as a ground reconnaissance unit (1966-1970), then later as part of an air cavalry troop supporting the 101st Airborne Division (1971-1972), and finally activated with the 11th Aviation Group in Da Nang (1972-1973). This reconnaissance unit conducted tasks such as ground patrols, convoy security, base defense, bomb damage assessments, and recovering downed aircraft.
