The 5th Battalion, 83rd Field Artillery Regiment is a unit with a history rooted in both the 5th Field Artillery Regiment and the 83rd Field Artillery Regiment. It was constituted in the Regular Army as part of the 5th Field Artillery, which itself has a lineage tracing back to the Civil War. The 83rd Field Artillery Regiment was reorganized and redesignated from the 25th Cavalry in 1959. The 5th Battalion, 83rd Field Artillery Regiment was likely formed through the reorganization of existing units.
