The 38th Infantry Regiment was a “Buffalo Soldier” infantry regiment that existed from 1866 until it was consolidated in 1869 with the 41st Infantry to form the new 24th Infantry Regiment. While the 38th was not permanently stationed at Jackson Barracks, its successor, the 25th Infantry, was based there in 1869, making the barracks a significant post for the Buffalo Soldiers’ legacy. The 38th was initially formed after the Civil War and tasked with roles like guarding settlers on the Western frontier before its consolidation.
