The 1st Armored Division, nicknamed “Old Ironsides,” is the oldest armored division in the US Army, activated in July 1940. It was the first American armored division to see combat in World War II, participating in the invasion of North Africa (Operation Torch) and later fighting in Tunisia, Sicily, and Italy. After the war, the division served in Germany before returning to the US in April 1946.
