The 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, nicknamed the “Triple Nickels”, was the first all-Black paratrooper unit in the U.S. military, formed in 1944. Due to wartime discrimination, they were not sent to combat but were deployed on a top-secret mission, “Operation Firefly,” to fight wildfires in the Western U.S. caused by Japanese balloon bombs, becoming the military’s first smokejumpers. Their bravery and success in fire suppression and bomb disposal helped challenge racial stereotypes and pioneer modern airborne firefighting techniques.
