The 84th Infantry Division was activated on October 15, 1942, during World War II, but its roots trace back to World War I, when it was initially formed in 1917. The division was made up of troops primarily from Wisconsin, Illinois, and Kentucky, and it adopted the nickname “Railsplitters” in honor of Lincoln’s early life as a rail-splitter.
