The 502nd Infantry Regiment, part of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), has a long history of service in major US conflicts since World War II, including Normandy, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf War, and the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. Originally a parachute infantry regiment, it became an air assault unit in 1974 and its 1st and 2nd Battalions are currently active, serving in the 2nd Brigade Combat Team. Key historical moments include parachuting into Normandy on D-Day, “Cole’s Charge” during Operation Market Garden, and receiving the Medal of Honor posthumously for Private Joe Mann.
