The Army Air Assault Badge was created in 1974 and is awarded upon completion of a standardized Air Assault course that teaches helicopter operations, sling-load missions, and rappelling. The Rappel Master Tab is an advanced skill identifier, not a separate badge, that is awarded to graduates of the Rappel Master course after earning the Air Assault Badge. The Rappel Master course teaches soldiers how to become qualified to manage and execute rappelling operations, both from towers and aircraft.
