SP4 (Specialist 4) was a U.S. Army enlisted rank, pay grade E-4, signifying a technical expert not yet a Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO), equivalent to Corporal but without command duties, a rank now simply called Specialist (SPC) for E-4, with “SP4” being an older designation used until the 1970s. It represented skilled personnel, distinct from NCOs who supervise, and today’s E-4 Specialist fills that role, though higher specialist grades (E-5, E-6, etc.) were phased out, leaving only the E-4 Specialist.
