Troop D, 17th Cavalry was a U.S. Army reconnaissance unit, also known as a Long Range Patrol (LRP) unit, that served in Vietnam. The unit performed ground and air reconnaissance and specialized missions, and was known for its distinctive maroon beret. The “tab” in the name likely refers to a unit patch or a military-style sticker or apparel item.
