The Raid on Los Baños was a celebrated, textbook World War II operation on February 23, 1945, where the 11th U.S. Airborne Division and Filipino guerrillas successfully liberated 2,147 Allied civilians and soldiers from a Japanese internment camp in the Philippines. Coordinated under Colonel Robert H. Soule, the combined force infiltrated the camp area the night before, with paratroopers jumping in to meet the 11th Airborne’s ground and amphibious forces in the early morning hours to surprise the guards during their calisthenics. The rescue was completed quickly, with the prisoners evacuated by amphibious vehicles across a lake to safety by early afternoon.
