The 24th Infantry Regiment, a “Buffalo Soldier” regiment, was organized on November 1, 1869, at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, by consolidating the 38th and 41st U.S. Infantry Regiments, both of which were initially composed of Black enlisted soldiers. These regiments, along with the 39th and 40th Infantry, were authorized by Congress on July 28, 1866. The 24th Infantry, along with the 25th Infantry (formed from the 39th and 40th), was part of the post-Civil War reorganization of the Army.
