The 29th Infantry Division is best known for its role in the D-Day landings at Omaha Beach during World War II. Formed in 1917, it was nicknamed the “Blue and Gray” due to its origins in both Union and Confederate Civil War units. The division’s 116th Infantry Regiment was among the first wave of troops to land on Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944, enduring heavy casualties. Following the initial assault, the division fought through Normandy, including the bloody struggle for Saint-Lô, and continued fighting across France and into Germany.
