HISTORY

• • Formation and Training: The 59th IPSD was formed at Fort Benning, Georgia, in early 1968, concurrently with the 47th IPSD. Handlers and their German Shepherd dogs (the exclusive breed used for scout missions) were trained at the USAIC Dog Training facility. The unit was a redesignation of the previous 59th Infantry Counterfire Platoon, which had served in the Korean War.
