A U.S. Army veteran who served in the 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment during the Vietnam War was part of the 196th Infantry Brigade, which fought in combat zones. Soldiers in this unit may have earned combat pay or a Combat Infantryman Badge (CIB) and would have been stationed in Vietnam during the war, which saw the 1st Infantry Division as a significant fighting force in the country.
