- World War I: The unit was constituted on August 15, 1917, as the 23rd Engineer Regiment (Road) and earned the nickname “The Road Builders of the AEF” (American Expeditionary Forces) for its work building and maintaining highways in France. It participated in the Lorraine, Saint Mihiel, and Meuse-Argonne campaigns.
